Description and specific excellence
The National Institute for Nuclear Physics (INFN) is an organization dedicated to the study of the fundamental constituents of matter and the laws governing them. The Institute conducts theoretical and experimental research in the fields of sub-nuclear, nuclear and astro-particle physics. Fundamental research in these areas requires the use of cutting-edge research tools and technology that the INFN develops in its own laboratories and in collaboration with industry.
The Institute also promotes the transfer of skills, methods and instrumental techniques developed in the course of their business to research in other fields such as medicine, energy, cultural heritage and the environment. All these activities are carried out in close collaboration with the academic world.
The activities of the INFN are based on two types of complementary research facilities: Sectionsand the National Laboratories. The Sections are based in university departments and provide a direct link between the Institute and the University.
